The group returned to Ell and Long Pond, to complete a 5.3 mile “out and back” hike from North Road to Stubtown Rd.
The first mile from North Road is the most challenging, featuring steep ascents and descents. You’ll need to navigate 10-15 foot high piles of large boulders and 60-75 foot high climbs. Despite the difficulty, the natural arrangement of rocks and roots creates steps that make the climbs easier. It almost feels as if nature placed certain Rhododendrons along the way to serve as handles when you need them most.
As you traverse these steep climbs, you can see how they act as water pathways during heavy rain. Fallen trees and large branches, likely carried away by water, line the sides and bottom of these climbs.
Like many trails in New England, this one transforms with the seasons. Our last hike here was in the heart of winter, with bare trees offering clear views of Long Pond through their branches. Now, even though the trees are fully leafed out, you can still catch glimpses of the pond. We ventured down a short side path and enjoyed a good view of the pond, along with some trees beginning to show their fall colors. I’m excited to return in the fall to capture photos of the changing leaves reflecting on the water.

The Nature Conservancy does an excellent job of keeping this trail well-marked. You’ll also find areas where they have reinforced the sides of the trail to prevent further erosion. Sturdy bridges are in place to cross over areas with water or wetlands.
If you’re looking for a halfway point to park, there’s a trailhead on Canonchet Road. From there, heading east will take you to the easier section of the trail, passing Ashville Pond on your left and eventually ending at Stubtown Road. For a more challenging hike, head west, where you’ll pass Long Pond on your right and eventually reach North Road. This path includes the steepest parts of the trail and offers amazing views of Long Pond.
Where did we stop for breakfast after the hike: Higher Grounds
Being in the Richmond area, we decided to stop again at Higher Grounds for coffee and a breakfast sandwich. Again it was a great experience with friendly staff and high quality coffee and food. See earlier blog post on our first visit to Higher Grounds.
