Our hiking group embarked on a memorable 6-mile journey, starting from the Metcalf mess hall at Camp Yawgoog. This nostalgic location holds a special place in our hearts, as many of us spent numerous summer days there, indulging in meals, singing camp songs, and enjoying entertaining skits during our camping adventures with the Troop.

Our hike began on the General Dean Trail, winding past several familiar campsites such as Teddy Roosevelt and Sherwood Forest. These names alone conjure up a treasure trove of memories, filled with camaraderie and the spirit of adventure that Scouting fosters. We then continued on the blue trail towards the fascinating Dinosaur Caves, eventually crossing over the state line into Connecticut.

One of the most awe-inspiring moments of our hike was encountering a roaring waterfall. The sound of the cascading water and the sight of its power left us in awe. We pressed on until we reached the serene Green Fall Pond. As we hiked around the pond, we were greeted with signs of vibrant wildlife, including beaver-chewed trees and their footprints delicately imprinted on the slushy ice. These little signs of life reminded us of the beauty and resilience of nature.

The hike presented some challenges, particularly when we had to cross a swift-moving river. We carefully navigated this by hopping from rock to rock and using makeshift bridges. This part of the trail required a bit of agility and teamwork, which added to the sense of adventure. Generally, the trail was easy to follow, although some sections were tricky due to the icy surfaces. Despite the warm air, the wooden bridges and rocks retained their icy coating from the cold night before, making our journey a bit more demanding.

The weather conditions slowed our pace, and the hike took us a leisurely 2.5 hours to complete. The slower pace allowed us to fully immerse ourselves in the surroundings and appreciate the natural beauty that enveloped us.

Overall, this hike was a refreshing return to Camp Yawgoog, filled with both nostalgia and new experiences. It’s a reminder of the enduring allure of the great outdoors and the countless adventures that await us.
