We kicked off our hike behind the old Metcalf Mess Hall, winding our way up to Sherwood Forest, picking up the blue trail, looping counterclockwise around Yawgoog Pond and back to the trailhead. The trail brought us full circle, wrapping up just shy of five miles, a perfect blend of fresh air, familiar paths, and good company.

Everyone in our group had deep roots at Yawgoog. We’d all spent countless weekends here over the years — pitching tents at the campsites, bunking in the cabins, and soaking up the magic of summer weeks with our troops. As adults, while the scouts were off earning merit badges, hanging out with friends, or making new friends, we found ways to keep ourselves busy. Sometimes we’d relax back at camp, but we’d also we’d lace up our boots and hit the trails, rediscovering the beauty of a place that had given us so many memories.

The hike brought us through some familiar trails, including some 20-25 foot climbs. Thankfully nature provided some natural stone steps. However, I’m sure if “Foreman” was here, he’d recognize the steps aren’t up to code!

And finally, we made our way to the edge of Yawgoog Pond — a place that never fails to take your breath away. No matter where you stand, the view is pure magic. It wasn’t too long ago that we had 30 or 40 scouts lined up along that stone wall, the shimmering pond behind them and Camp Sandy Beach just visible across the water. If you think the photos are stunning, just know — they barely scratch the surface. Being there in person is something else entirely.

Anyone from Troop 8 remember this path well-traveled?
