Rhode Island may not have towering mountain peaks, but it’s rich with diverse hiking options. Throughout the state, the Department of Environmental Management, the Audubon Society, conservation societies, and many local communities care for protected lands filled with trails that wind through forests, fields, and coastal landscapes.

Some places never lose their appeal, no matter how often you return, and Goddard Memorial State Park in East Greenwich is one of them. Its open fields, golf course, beach, boat ramps, horse stables, and more than six miles of shared hiking and horseback‑riding trails make it a favorite for outdoor enthusiasts.

As you move through the wooded paths, you’ll catch glimpses of golfers on the greens, dog walkers along the edges, and beautiful views of the Greenwich Bay, sometimes dotted with boats depending on the season.

The park may not be large or densely forested, but wildlife is still easy to spot; on our last visit, we found fresh deer tracks along a gravel road. And keep your eyes open a white squirrel with a gray tail; our group is convinced we saw one dart across the trail and race up a 50‑foot tree, though none of us were fast enough to capture a photo.
